a page...

...this week has been a very sad week. i have had one of them weeks and looking back, it has been one of them months to be honest. all over the place. bad news and good news all round. while i have time, here is a page from the old sketchbook. potatochop wasn't playing today and so i shouted swearwords at it. mister playstation lion is one of my favourite characters. he is based on the mister. i am trying to develop the lion face range of emotions. i think i am getting there.

favourite page ever...

...here is the page that i mentioned in an earlier post. as per the norm, i have been drawing so much lately that i am a few pages ahead of my posts (i like to a post a pic a day, sometimes two at a a push). i drew this apple page of amazing-ness last week. it took a while as i was super concentrating and on what i don't know. i think i was lost in a drawing daze. it is so tempting to draw another apple page but i don't think the time is quite right and if i am not careful i will end up with a sketchbook dedicated to apples but i quite like that idea?

double vision...
...two more pages from the sketchbook. As you can see, I did two big things last week. On Sunday I went to see Girls Aloud at the MEN Arena with Emma and Tracey. Then on Wednesday I saw Ross Noble at the Opera House. I had just done a stint of six days at the cafe and was shattered by the time it came to go but I enjoyed it and he did made me laugh. Also on the pages are some boots that i drew as I was inspired by some end pages of Christiane's. as usual there are other things that i have drawn that i have done or seen during the last week and just a few are random bits of doodles. the little cat at the bottom is Katie's. I started a new sketchbook yesterday. it is an A5 slim hardback seawhite of brighton one. I have already drawn two and a half pages in it!

skipping...

...on to the next page. we have some more lions. this page is my least favourite of the ones that i have been drawing lately. it is just a sketchbook i suppose and i am hoping the new slightly bigger sketchbook will help with my ideas. it is very exciting. it has been sat there under my desk on the 'sketchbook' pile for a while now-i think i got it in January. i am hoping/planning that i will find the power to be more adventurous with colour. i haven't done anything of what i planned to do this evening as i am wiped out from working at the cafe. i am therefore off to watch an episode of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. check it out!

hop, skip...

...and a jump straight on to page 62 of the lions. this page is more of an imagination page. i have been at work for the majority of this week so it hasn't been a very productive week illustration wise. i haven't drawn properly for two days, i haven't watched telly for about a week and i am still drawing conical flasks even though i ain't seen any. this evening i have finished sewing the main bits of nine big robotingtons. soon they will be joined by small robotingtons and 'scrap metal' robotingtons.

19 May 2009

patterns...

...are beginning to appear on the sketchbook pages. i have always liked drawing the same thing over and over and over and over again. it is relaxing. i think the next couple of pages are going to be very much more repeat pattern based. i have already done an apple page. i think there will be a pigeon page and maybe a conical flask page which will represent the mister's desk at work though he tells me he mainly uses duran bottles and i suppose he does as i have seen them. he is now telling me all about the different bottles and i should know never to ask him a question as you don't just get an answer, you get a big fat answer. i must get back to my sewing machine. i cant remember what i named her.

buy one get one free...

...here we have two pages from the sketchbook. i feel like sometimes i should explain why i have drawn what i have so here goes. most of the doodles are based on actual things that i or other people have done or on what i have seen other people do. then i sometimes just draw whatever i feel like to fill in the spaces. i did make some banana cupcakes in pink polka dot cases. the mister has been at work writing a report about his experiments but i love drawing the conical flasks. i have been drawing but not as much - mainly been sewing. i read the book 'the time traveller's wife'. cups of tea have been made and enjoyed. someone last week did wear a serious face and i kept turning over the telly. i often find myself drawing the time when i see it. numbers are nice to draw. one character who always pops up is the ginger cat. he lives up stairs but we haven't seen him in ages. pigeons are another thing that i like to draw. they are always walking round Manchester.

swimming in a book...
...are the blue fish that I painted on a box which I posted to Mail Me Art. My friend Katie bought the book and let me borrow it so that I could see my work in print. There it is on a page 37 and there again on the back! It is very exciting to see some of my work in actual proper print even if it feels scary as when i saw it, it made me realise that illustration is what I do. It took me a while to figure things out but these last few months of working hard and drawing every day has helped me find a way forward with it all. please follow the link to find out more about Mail Me Art and why not enter Mail Me Art 2? I have some ideas in the old brain cogs for my submission.

musical instruments...

...are very much in fashion at the moment. so are plants. i have been on the hunt for a new baby cacti to join the window-sill gang but nope, nada, nowt. i cant seem to find any little ones. another sketchbook page is featured above...people are doing a lot of staring when they see me drawing. i wish i could draw at work while i am standing at the till. i am using the sewing machine a lot as i making a new batch of robotingtons and some new stock. watch this space. there will be new and old stuff, using stuff that has been sat around for ages. best get back to the sewing.

slow like a sloth...

...week. it has been a very long week and one with little creativity so far. there has been good news and bad news. i am trying my hardest to stay organised but this week has not gone according to plan. no swimming as of yet. i am planning to go after work tomorrow. the dying of fabric is going OK. just waiting for it to dry, ironed, patterns will be drawn, sewn up, folded inside out and then stuffed when i am watching the telly - Flight of the Concords! i have used all of the sky+ to record it and the mister is playing hell. i am off to see how the banana buns are baking then it will be back to the desk to do some drawing of sorts.

12 May 2009

green and yellow...

...another page of lions, fish, odds and ends. in Preston and in Manchester. watching the telly inside and watching the people while i am outside. i am trying to draw more active and moving lions. in other news, this week is going very slow. the fabric dying of the robotington fabric has taken me about a day and a half so far. its going a lot better than it was. the purple fabric for miss robotington is a bit hit and miss. it is very very pale. i have also phaffed around with my time, cleaning, tidying, looking at the clock etc, while waiting for someone to access the water damage in our flat. the 'to-do' list is waiting for me to pay it some proper attention tomorrow.

10 May 2009

celebrity...

...in the sketchbook. drawing while watching telly again. the other night i was watching Alan Carr and he made me laugh. drawing lions from the telly helps as they often have props or costumes on or something or other that i have to force myself to draw, like for example Alan Carr's glasses. i like drawing sunglasses on lions but not everyday glasses. as today is Sunday it is Super Clean Monica day, baking day and then the rest of it is lovely relaxing drawing day.

Plus I would just like to say a big Thank You to everyone who has bought a Robotington from Etsy, PAD and anywhere else. My stocks are once again low and so the sewing machine shall whirl into action again next week.

party in the print room...
...these are the two card designs i screen printed out yesterday. i have about thirty in total and some of these, all with other things will be going to The Turnpike Gallery as part of a craft showcase that I will be having there during June. i don't know where to start with the to-do list. i know what i should be doing, drawing and writing towards a/the/any story but i feel quite happy with the little things i am doing. while i was printing the pirate lion yesterday, my brain was working overtime, thinking about what he was drawing, why he has a bird on his head, where was he travelling to if anywhere and then i got back to thinking about the bird tree story i tried to write during my second year of university. there is a little ball rolling and maybe i will run after it.

07 May 2009

promotional pirate postcard...

...and page fifty four of the lions. as i had a full day to myself, i planned out some plans for the print room. three and a half out of four of my plans worked. the harmonica lion copper etch didn't come out as nice as i had hoped due to the little repair i had to do to it to save it from being scrapped. the outline work looks very nice so i am going to start afresh with a new piece of copper.

for some strange reason, blogger would not publish any of my posts before so i am on the mister's computer. i think my laptop is ill considering how badly it has been performing over the last few weeks. the snooker lion is making his first appearance in the little square sketchbook. he has moved up the world rankings from the 'scribble pages'. i usually do these when i am not thinking and just idea doodling it all out. night for now. i am off to have a rest after screen printing 150 postcards front and back, as well as thirty odd 'happy birthday' cards.

06 May 2009

telly watching...

...while drawing. all the A's, B's and C's are from playing along with a quiz that was on TV. the lion has got himself a new cup as i accidentally kicked his over the other week. it broke and he was not happy. i try to talk to the geese outside but don't like drawing them so drew a half-pirate lion talking to a bird. i have a new stock of apples in the kitchen to eat, hence all the apples. who needs to take photos when you can draw, plus i am naff at taking photos anyway. i have draw the harmonica lion on the copper plate. it will be printed asap. maybe with or without an aquatint. will see how the time flows.

05 May 2009

observing...

...and imagination. the rain is coming back and i am now drawing indoors. i cant really afford to go into cafes at the moment as we are on a tight budget but there is only so many times i can draw john playing on the ps3. i think i shall dedicate a page to it in the future. i am quite enjoying this challenge i set myself to draw a page or two a day. it is helping me a lot with character development but i can get lazy and just draw lion heads so i am trying to draw more full bodies. in other news, some of my lion sketchbook pages have been accepted to be included within the Sketchbook for Schools website. It is a great resource to help and promote the use of creative sketchbooks in schools. There is further information about it all if you follow the link. i am off now to draw website related things and to draw the harmonica lion on the copper plate.

04 May 2009

battery is low...

...i do not have the energy to entertain colouring-in as i am super tired from four days at the cafe. i should have picked up the felt-tips but next time i will try harder. i have been working on sorting odds and ends out so that i can do some proper illustration work tomorrow. first on the to-do list is a bit of swimming in the morning and then some observational drawing in the city centre of Manchester. i drew this page last week on thursday. it was raining when i visited the print room in Preston. i also took some new stock to PAD in Preston, it is a very nice gallery and shop place and would recommend a visit. i am a few pages ahead of the page above as i have been drawing straight after work while i wait for my tea and then before i go to bed but tomorrow is a proper out and about drawing day then in after dinner it will be back to the big desk in the office to draw properly. that's what Tuesdays are for. drawing (maybe colouring-in).

03 May 2009

forever doodling...

...still in the sketchbook and still drawing them lions. i have been at work all day. it was fairly busy at the cafe and i have rediscovered how nice diary milk buttons are! i am addicted. someone was searching for their slippers and the mister had some very stern words to say over the telephone about some water that has been leaking into our flat. i must get back to the television as the snooker final is on.

01 May 2009

keep on...

..keeping on drawing. when i have the time to squeeze in a bit of drawing in between working at the cafe, sewing, cleaning and general phaffing around, then the sketchbook comes out. as per the usual, here are some more lions. i am trying to draw different things but with the lions i can just draw them straight off as trying to draw new things look funny at first until i get to how i think they should look, so sometimes i just stick with the lions. the plan is to try and draw out some other animals over the next couple of days after work. my next day off is Tuesday. i will be ready for a big fat nap during Tuesday. oh yeah.
