experimenting...

...with dry-point etching in the print room this afternoon. This print is based on one of the lions i saw playing a harmonica last year in St. Ann's Square. I quite like drawing music themed lions after watching Later with Jools last week so decided to replicate the doodle in print form. This is only the second time I have done a dry-point and I wasn't in the groove today for many reasons but after about four naff prints and a bit of editing with an etching awl thing, i got three prints to come out ok. the print is about 9 or 10cm squared and the paper I printed on was quite creamy looking. I had to use different paper than what i used to so i was a tad grumble-y. I have decided now that this is the image that I am going to draw on the piece of copper that I was saving for the surfing ladybird. i am off now to eat my favourite meal of sausages, mash, carrots and gravy. i will be as usual drawing after my tea. i have to fit it in as and when i can.

exercise...

...mr lion and i have had a busy week up until now. we went swimming, watched music on the telly, ate many apples and we also managed to fit in a bit of drawing. i am tending to draw over several pages instead of just one page at a time and it seems to have increased my output. i just need to incorporate this plan into producing some new portfolio pieces now. i dismantled my university portfolio a couple of months back. the shiny new portfolios are waiting for shiny and new work! i am back at the cafe tomorrow so will be relaxing this evening with a little solo drink and draw session. no beer, just tea. drawing will resume after food of course.

sunny days...

...and ice-creams. i have still yet to have my first ice-cream cone of the year. some more sketchbook doodles for you readers to look at. i over heard two ladies talking, one was telling her friend about two cats called Polly and Peggy that she had adopted. i saw someone wearing a nice stripy green jumper, the mister playing the ps3 and i saw a lost pair of sunglasses. i decided to be inventive and changed them into a pair of glasses that a pigeon had found.

i have been trying to update etsy for a while but i find it difficult to take nice photographs for the shop. i managed to get a decent looking one of the large robotingtons (above) and so there are two of that size in the shop now. look out for more updates - see the little boxes on the right hand side of this blog. one update done, several more to do over the course of the next few weeks.

creeping colour...

...bits of it are starting to appear in my sketch's as since tackling the website designs, the fear of colour has returned. i wasn't using it much before but i was trying, so i am trying once again to get to grips with it. the page above is from Wednesday. i did some drawing in a different cafe after i finished working at the cafe. i did buy some golden delicious apples and am addicted to fruit at the moment. i eat about six pieces of it a day. the little houses are from Sunday when attempted to draw on the train from Hudds to Manchester Victoria. its not the same as drawing on a bus. in other not so exciting news, i went to see the nose doctor again today and there is nothing they can do for me. i just have to live with it with the help of medication. i have ranted about my nose for too long and so will have to become friends with the evil nose.

23 April 2009

and counting...

...i bet you readers are getting bored of the sketchbook pages now? as per the usual the cafe job isn't the most secure of jobs and so i am struggling to afford to print yet again after three weeks of a decent wage. so sketching is all i can really do for the moment. my routine is so random and i just keep dreaming of my own or shared print studio. i keep trying digitally coloured in work but it doesn't feel 'me' yet and i haven't enough time to sit and concentrate with the paints at the moment. the website designs i have been working on look ok but still never suitable for my overthinking mind. my laptop is very slow and the extra ram helps a tad but its struggling in potatochop. i think i many have a go at playing the old lotto this week. what numbers shall i pick?

on the train...

...with a new friend, the bad apple. he isn't bad as in evil but bad as in naughty. he causes mischief in the allotments and between the pages of my sketchbook. i drew this page while on my way to Huddersfield and at my granma's bungalow. it was a very sunny day and i had a bottle of cider while granma enjoyed her Guinness and lucozade, known as a black and tan. we had a very nice time. i have quite a few pages drawn in my sketchbook now and soon it will be time to move to the new bigger sketchbook. i am hoping to have an A3 one at the end of the year! today i went swimming and it seems to have helped my poorly arm. i also went to see the old photocopier in the library and have been attempting the website again which i must get back to after i have eaten some food.

20 April 2009

an early bird...

...drawing on the train prior to working at the cafe. my eyes are very tired at the moment and my right arm is still very sore. i think i will be going swimming tomorrow morning in order to try and get it moving, plus i need some exercise. these lions above are actually people i have seen lately. the guy filling in the crossword was on the train and said 'bless you' when i sneezed. the mister still refuses to take off his beard, hence the beardy lion and the fat ginger cat is around once again miaowing its head off. i think a coffee cup spoke to me but i cant be sure.

19 April 2009

forty two and counting...

...these lions are from my visit to stoke. i went there after work on Thursday and these doodles are from Friday when we went to a garden/shop place and the unicorn pub, hence the magic unicorn. i quite like him. i used to love watching rainbow brite as a kid and always remember drawing the characters, especially her white horse. i used to copy them from an annual i had bought at a jumble sale. i miss jumble sales. in other news, i am still drawing, drawing stories, sewing and just trying to fit in whatever i can in between the cafe job. i am just back from a mad dash to Huddersfield. i have a poorly arm and need food.

18 April 2009

half and half...

..out and about. this page was half drawn on the train back to Manchester from Preston and during my latest visit to Stoke to see my friend who is also called Debbie. i am struggling to make dandelions look like dandelions but i think the seeds things look ok. the pirate lion is back in action and i am just about to hop on a train to Huddersfield to see my granma. i am taking a robotington with me to show him the sights of my little hometown. the sketchbook will be joining me as per usual.

15 April 2009

ta-da...

...something seems to be happening with my ideas. i am trying to write a little story. nothing major, just a little one to get me going with two of my characters for a possible screen-printed zine/booklet thing. i don't like thumb-nails as i tend to stick things right in the middle of a page. its seems like a good starting point and so i will continue drawing out this story with complete randomness whilst keeping a bit of my attention on the storyline. i ain't keeping any kind of word count and the fewer the words, the better. i have completed the robotingtons and have started on two big one metre sized ones. i have not played with the new fabric dye yet as drawing ideas seem to have taken over since my last print-room visit so i am just going with the flow.

14 April 2009

yesterday...

...we went to Heaton Park in Manchester. six of went in Mitch's little car on another adventure. Mr Robotington sure is getting out and about lately. it was also the mister's birthday so we took a birthday picnic with us. i should have really taken my sketchbook with me this time as it was warmer and there were plenty of dogs running around that i should have drew. i am off to finish off the batch of robots, a couple of them need a few buttons and their monitors stitching. i will be putting some on etsy and some in PAD in Preston. i have been working all day at the cafe and have another three full days ahead of me. i have much to do and so i shall go and get on with the to-do list.

11 April 2009

foxy...

...this is a print that i created during Thursdays print session. i was working on a copper plate the night before but it went wrong and so come Thursday i needed to be able to print. i had never tried dry-point etching, so after i re-prepared my copper plates, i had a go at drawing straight on to a small piece of aluminium with a sharp etching tool. this scratches a 'groove' straight in to the plate and after you have finished 'drawing', you are able to print straight away without having to etch the lines. he came out quite well and so i have another two pieces of aluminium to work on ready for the next print session as well as the re-prepared pieces of copper.

10 April 2009

over the hill...

...and we have still far to travel on the quest for colour. i drew this page while on the train to Preston yesterday. there were a lot of families going to Blackpool. i wrote down snippets of conversation and could have easily sat on the train all day drawing people, i mean lions. i had an amazing day yesterday. so much seemed to just happen and i tried to go with the flow as much as possible without worrying. i went to Preston to play in the printroom and tried a dry-point etch for the first time. i will post up a picture later as the prints i did are just drying and being pressed. i have to go now to get ready to go to work where i make coffee. i should really draw more about the cafe.

05 April 2009

down in the park...
...wythenshaw park in Manchester. the mister has been nagging to take mr robotington out for a day and so we took him for a picnic. he sat and watched the magpies steal bread, watched me while i went to find some 'orses, he tried to climb a tree and went for a walk to see the fancy house. we had a vrey nice day and thanks to mitch for inviting us along. also, please remember to go and look at the UK Craft Mafia exhibition at the Manchester Craft and Design Centre as there are some mini robotingtons there and other fab work by other mafia members. plus if any of you out there own or see a robotington, why not take a photo? the fabric dyes finally arrived and so there will be mucho dying this week as well as the usual doodling and drawing. i am having fun creating my own single page sketchbooks.

03 April 2009

computer love...

...and hate. i miss printmaking. i have been unable to go since my last visit in January due to work and severe lack of funds. i have been working on a couple of etching plates that i hope to take in over the next month if possible. the potatochop is ok, just takes up a lot of my phaffing time as i am trying to create some work on there. may go back to the paint and brush. all is quiet on the textile front as i am still awaiting the delivery of the dyes and fixer etc that i ordered. i do have shop bought coloured cotton but it ain't the same as dying it yourself. i like to create it all but may try the other fabric if i have time in between all the cafe work. i have more than enough rage to release through the mechanical pencil. angry scribbles are great. at the weekend the mister warned me that he was going to start a month/thirty days of beard 'growing' hence the lion above. i have been drawing website typography since January. what is wrong with me?
